This sculpture was created for the Zukunft Visionen 2020 festival in response to the theme “An die Substanz” (To the Substance). The exploration of substance as both a material and a conceptual entity — a search for the essence that connects human interaction with the world around us. My work examines how recycled urban materials, particularly posters collected from the streets of Berlin, can become part of a new life cycle, reflecting social and ecological transformations.
The “igloo”, made from posters, serves as a metaphor for entering the heart of material that, at first glance, seems to have lost its significance. This structure represents not only the physical substance of the city but also the social processes that are in constant flux. The posters, as fragments of information, merge into a single substance, revealing the stories and cultural codes they carry. Through the process of recycling, a new identity of the material emerges.
My concept focuses on affordable housing as a necessity, closely tied to resource issues and sustainable development. The idea of using waste and recycled materials in architecture and urbanism opens up the possibility of creating new, affordable, and resilient spaces. In this context, recycling becomes not only a practice but also a philosophy that challenges conventional ideas about materiality and secondary use.
This work raises questions about how we use materials, resources, and space, inviting reflection on how our decisions shape the world around us and offering alternatives that hold greater significance in the context of sustainable development.
